MEET THE COASTAL COMMANDERS: OUR MOTIVATION FOR THE WORLD'S TOUGHEST ROW

Updated: 5 days ago

As we prepare for our Atlantic Ocean Rowing Challenge and gear up for the World’s Toughest Row, we wanted to take a moment to share more about the faces behind the oars: Jon, Scott, and Martin. You might already know our bios from the website, but this blog is all about the “why”—what motivates us to take on this incredible challenge and how each of us brings something unique to the team.

This isn’t just about crossing an ocean. For us, it’s personal. Inspired by Jon’s cancer recovery journey, we’re rowing to raise funds and awareness for two incredible charities: @younglivesvscancer and @moveagainstcancercharity. Their work will fuel us to keep pushing through every wave, knowing we’re making a difference beyond the boat.

Jon: The Endurance Specialist

Jon is our go-to guy for anything involving stamina, focus, and perseverance. With over 15 years of triathlon and adventure racing experience, he knows exactly what it takes to keep going when your body wants to quit.

But Jon’s story is much more than his athletic achievements. In 2019, he was diagnosed with stage 2 testicular cancer—a moment that tested him in ways no race ever had. True to his nature, Jon faced it head-on, using his passion for fitness to stay strong through treatment. His recovery inspired him to live with even more purpose, which he now channels into this Atlantic crossing.

When you row alongside Jon, you feel his quiet determination. Whether he’s pushing through tough training sessions or talking about his fundraising goals, Jon reminds us why we’re doing this. Oh, and his calf muscles? They’re already legendary on the team!

Scott: The Handyman Extraordinaire

Every team needs a problem-solver, and Scott is ours. A qualified electrician turned airline captain, Scott’s background is as varied as it is impressive. From racing motocross to taking on mountain bike trails, he’s always been drawn to challenges that demand both skill and perseverance.

Scott’s practical skills are matched only by his love for a challenge. He’s completed Special Forces test marches, ultra-marathons, and functional fitness events. The highlight? Running 50 miles around his home island of Jersey in the Round the Rock Ultra Marathon.

If anything breaks on the boat, Scott is the one we’ll rely on to fix it. His mechanical expertise and determination make him indispensable. Whether it’s a complex repair or simply keeping the team laughing with his quick wit, Scott is ready for whatever the Atlantic throws at us.

Martin: The Expedition Specialist

Martin’s experience with extreme environments makes him a key asset to the team. His CV reads like something out of an explorer’s journal. He’s climbed some of the tallest mountains in Africa and Asia, including the 8th highest mountain in the world. His ability to thrive in remote, high-pressure environments makes him the perfect teammate for a 3,000-mile ocean row.

But Martin isn’t just about physical strength—though his nickname, Mr. Gorilla Man, might suggest otherwise! He’s also a master at keeping spirits up when the going gets tough. Whether it’s a story, a joke, or simply leading by example, Martin brings a steady, calming presence to the team.

For Martin, this row is about showing others that limits are meant to be broken. His drive to inspire others fuels every stroke of the oar.

Why We Row: Supporting Cancer Charities

At the heart of our mission are the charities we’re supporting: @younglivesvscancer and @moveagainstcancercharity. These organisations remind us that life’s challenges—whether it’s cancer, an ocean, or anything in between—can be faced with courage, resilience, and community.

We’re not just rowing to cross an ocean; we’re rowing to inspire hope, raise funds, and show that even the toughest battles can be won. To learn more about how you can support our journey, check out our fundraising page here.

Join Us in Our Journey

Thank you for following our journey. Together, with your support, we’ll make waves—both on the Atlantic and in the lives of those we’re rowing for. Stay tuned for more updates, and let’s row this together!
