PREPARING FOR THE ATLANTIC: RYA Courses with SeaSports Southwest

Updated: Dec 4, 2024

This November, our preparation for the World’s Toughest Row reached new heights during an incredible training program with SeaSports Southwest. Over several action-packed days, we immersed ourselves in a series of RYA courses, each designed to sharpen our skills and bolster our confidence for the challenges of the open sea. These courses are not just vital for our development as mariners—they are a prerequisite for participating in the race.

From navigation techniques to sea survival, every session brought valuable lessons and a renewed sense of readiness for our Atlantic adventure. Here’s a closer look at what we learned and how it’s preparing us for the journey ahead.

Day 1: SRC Marine Radio Course

We kicked off the program with a warm welcome and coffee and cake before diving into the Short Rance Certificate Marine Radio course. Led by our skilled instructor, Tim Cox, this session was all about mastering marine VHF radio communication. We covered everything from basic operation to emergency protocols, learning to communicate effectively in critical situations. At the close of play we had the opportunity to take our written and verbal exams, ensuring we left with a solid understanding of radio procedures—a vital skill for any ocean journey.

Day 2: RYA First Aid

The following day was dedicated to RYA First Aid, another crucial part of our training. Under Charlies guidance, we tackled medical situations specific to maritime environments. From treating seasickness and hypothermia to responding to more serious injuries, we learned how to handle emergencies with confidence. These life-saving skills gave us the confidence to handle emergencies during our Atlantic Row.

Days 3, 4 and 5: Essential Navigation and Seamanship Skills

One of the highlights of the week was the Essential Navigation and Seamanship Skills course. Designed with ocean rowers in mind, Tim took us through navigation techniques, chart reading, weather interpretation, and seamanship essentials. This hands-on training challenged us to think like seasoned mariners, preparing us to make confident decisions under diverse conditions.

Day 6: Sea Survival Course

Our final day was an intensive Sea Survival course, starting at Sea Sports UK and concluding with a pool session at Dawlish Swimming Pool. This course gave us practical experience with life-saving techniques, including deploying life rafts and surviving in rough waters. Under Tim’s expert instruction, we practiced survival strategies and built the mental resilience needed for emergency scenarios. By the end of the session, we felt more equipped to face any challenges the sea might present.

Reflecting on Our November Training

Looking back, this RYA training program was an unforgettable experience. From mastering radio communication to life-saving first aid and navigation techniques, we left with skills that will guide us in our journey across the Atlantic.

A huge thank you to the SeaSports Southwest team, especially Tim and Sue Cox, for their dedication and expertise. This program was not only enlightening but empowering, bringing us one step closer to conquering the Atlantic in 2026.
